Android is a software stack for embedded devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications, as described in the following diagram:

The Android Operating System offers designers of embedded applications the ability to easily add a high-level OS to their product. The following is a brief list of Android features:

# Easy licensing terms for commercial development (Apache license)
# Includes a complete Application Framework enabling reuse and replacement of software components
# Multimedia, Graphics, and Graphical User Interface are included out of the box
# A large community of Android and Applications developers is ready today
# Offers a rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE
